Even amid the heart-wrenching loss of her father and ensuing monetary devastation, Maya and her mother showed resilience. Over the span of two years, they shifted between locations, living with relatives. Despite the circumstances, Maya’s mother managed to save enough money and operated a duty-free store in an airport, making sure Maya was able to get the highest quality education.
Despite his attempts, no measures were implemented to address the problem, and shortly after his grievance was registered, Parbhoe got killed. His homicide case remains unresolved, constituting one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in the history of Suriname. He is survived by his wife and a young daughter, Maya Parbhoe, who was merely 13 years old when it happened.

Maya’s battle against corruption originates from the personal experiences of inequity faced by her family. She frequently mentions the deep-rooted corruption in Suriname, where high-ranking officials, including the existing President and Vice President, have been implicated in multiple scandals. Her resolve to fight corruption and pursue justice for her father’s assassination consistently fuels her endeavors.
Maya’s ambitions reach further than just professional enterprise. She is vehemently committed to dismantling oppressive institutions and redistributing power to the common people. Maya holds the idea that Bitcoin is an exceptional instrument to expedite such a transformation. Her initiatives have attracted noticeable interest, and she has shifted her thoughts towards contesting for Suriname’s presidency. Taking motivation from leaders such as Nayib Bukele from El Salvador, Maya targets to introduce transparency and creativity to the government of Suriname, combat dishonesty, and envisage an improved future for her homeland.
The triumph of Winod Parbhoe enabled him to travel widely. During a visit to New York City in the late 1990s, he was motivated by the Plaza Hotel to establish an equivalent entity in Suriname. He collaborated with Dorsett Resorts & Hotels and formed the Suriname Leisure Company A.V.V., with the aim of transforming a building into a hotel incorporated with a casino. Jeffrey Clague, appointed by Dorsett as the local manager during the renovation, later assumed the role of general manager upon the opening of the casino.
Maya’s enterprising nature didn’t end there. She identified a chance to build a capital market independent of the conventional financial system. Using the Liquid Network, her goal was to reduce the minimum investment requirement. She collaborated with AlphaPoint to kick-start a platform, and got Robert van Trikt, the Central Bank governor, involved. They linked global capital markets and released a bond worth 0m for the state oil refinery in January 2020. However, in May, van Trikt faced charges of money laundering, and a newer, less technologically proficient governor took his place, causing the project to stall.
Maya Parbhoe alleges that money was unlawfully transferred from her father’s bank account to a BNY Mellon account with the intention of providing financial aid for weaponry to the FARC guerrilla rebel faction in Colombia. This transaction was reportedly enabled by the notorious arms trader Sarkis Songhanalian, also referred to as the “merchant of death.” As per Maya, her father was assassinated by two Colombian contract killers. This claim has been corroborated by an eyewitness who had been told to keep quiet about the incident.
After the passing of Winod, Maya and her mom realized they were financially devastated due to fraudulent activities. An impartial financial auditing body ratified that 4 million dollars were siphoned off from their bank accounts, yet they couldn’t recuperate the cash because of a dishonest legal system. Despite presenting proof, the supreme judicial court delivered a verdict against them in the middle of June 2024. Maya took to Twitter to reveal that a new judge had been introduced at the eleventh hour, substituting a judge they were accustomed to, insinuating a bribe was potentially involved.
Maya exhibited a strong fascination with technology and business from her childhood. At the tender age of six, she was already constructing PCs. Her education pathway led her to a certificate course at Oxford and to the study of econometrics in the Netherlands. After her return to Suriname, she balanced three jobs while simultaneously managing GreyMic Imports. This business later evolved into Quickship Logistics, a company she set up with assistance from her mother. With their acquisition of a house through a mortgage, there was a marked enhancement in their living standards.
Never one to settle, Maya established her second business, Icarus Geo, along with Sarish Genworth and Serge Tjin Wong Joe, a civil engineer boasting fifteen years of expertise. They focused the business on constructing infrastructure, including roads, dams, dikes, and ports. Icarus Geo also expanded rapidly, hitting their revenue targets and securing substantial contracts.
